I live in Essex and have come across your site from
information sent to me by Meraki. I wonder if you can
offer me any advise on setting up community internet in
my town, even if it localised in the town centre. I am
not really sure what questions to ask at the moment as
I am unfamiliar with the system. Once I have some facts
and figures I will canvas my local council for their
reaction.

Our experience is that planning is the most important factor followed by funding. You will first need to decide how you will supply the signal i.e. paid for online or free/paid for by subscription not online. An online payment system means you will need to buy the Pro version of Meraki. You will also need to cost in the broadband supply or 'piggyback' on someone else's system. You must also decide why you want to do this and who will benefit. Our experience is that if it is to just get cheap broadband that is not enough. We focus on isolated/elderly/disabled users and link our provision into training and support as well. This is a much better funding model for grant applications. To get going I recommend you buy a couple of Merakis, plug one into a router and set the other up as a repeater and see what happens, start small in a strategic place, you may be surprised what happens, good luck, John
